When asked, “What are your daily habits?”—I pause.
It’s not a simple question for me. I don’t follow a strict routine etched in stone. My daily habits shift based on a variety of factors: my mood or my overall emotional state, what’s occupying my mind, the day of the week, whether or not I worked the night before, how much sleep I got, whether I’m at home or traveling, or even the season—winter, spring, summer, or fall. Parenthood and professional responsibilities also shape the flow of my day. These are just a few of the many factors that come to mind as I write this.
That said, there are a few things I typically do most days, though not necessarily in the same order or at the same time. I pray. I read or listen to a spiritual devotion, I take both prescription and natural medicines. I check text messages and emails. I review my work and personal calendars. I check the weather to plan accordingly. And sometimes, if the mood strikes, I tune in to the radio. But again, all of this can vary depending on the day and what’s unfolding in real time.
If I had to name one habit that shows up most consistently in my life, it would be this: the practice of flexibility.
Contrary to popular belief, I don’t see that as a lack of discipline. To me, it’s a reflection of responsiveness—of being present and attuned to what each day uniquely requires.
